Wine Storage: The Secret To Wine Aging And Preservation

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

A wine collection deserves a right storage. Placing your wines the way they should be must be a priority if you are a wine collector. There are many ways on how to store them properly but whatever you choose keep in mind that the conditions must be stable.

A wine storage space needs to be constant at 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The wine cellar must be remote from the house’s main area and be kept cool at all times. When wines are drawn to trembling and excessive light their taste and condition are at risk. The cellar must not be exposed to sunlight.

Your wines can either be placed on a wine cellar or a wine cooler. Important tools in your cellar include wine racks. The wine safekeeping method will depend on your lifestyle, and the racks may be made of wood or metal. Metal racks are posh, while wood racks are timeless; both of them are attractive to look at.

It is a good thing to match the wine racks to the rest of the wine cellar. The final decisions you make in the cellar will be affected when you would love to show it to guests at your house. If you do some collaboration should be observed.

Shop around for wine racks and storage techniques that will fit together. Your wine storage style may be mistaken as owned by an experienced wine collector. It isn’t a complex task though it can rip you off a little bit of money.

Your wine storage methods have to be undemanding. Based on the wine features you would have to chill a wine before serving it. Wine coolers then will become your best friend. Wine coolers are available anywhere, in department stores or wine stores. The Internet is also a great source for wine storage solutions.

Stocking Up On Wine

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

You should be starting stocking up on wine the way experts do it when you have a large collection of antique wines.

Basically, wines should be stored at a chilly temperature between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius. Kept under the bed won’t help.

Most wines these days do not require to be aged for long periods so huge cellars aren’t that vital. It is of an advantage for your wines if you have the time, extra space and savings to build your cellar. A wine cellar at home is not that ideal for most households that other ways to keep them should be thought of.

Smart areas at home to keep your wines are the garage, garden shed, empty fireplace, and a cupboard. No matter where you decide to keep your wines, some factors must be considered.

Prefer areas in your household that are not drawn to changing temperatures due to heating systems.

Wines taste better when placed in dark areas. Generally, wines must be kept away from direct sunlight.

Another thing is to keep the wines lying down instead of standing up. Corks are designed to keep humidity and avoid passage of air as well as shunning from being crushed when taken out with a corkscrew.

Take note that some wines do not have to be matured longer before being enjoyed. White wines, modern red wines, and or a new Beaujolais are just some wines that age quickly and are truly ideal to be bought when you don’t have a huge wine cellar.

Refrain from unnecessary transfers of wines from one place to another unless for a drinking purpose.

It is also a good idea to have a wine and spirits store keep your delicate wine collection. Careful storage of wines is a must these days that companies can now offer safekeeping services for wines. This costs money though so this should only be done for special, antique wines that are reserved for selling in the future.

Thirst-quenching Bargain Wines Affordable wines that may cost lower without taking taste for granted are the blended ones. The red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chiraz; the white blend is a mixture of Semillon and chardonnay. Search for this wines at stores if you are on a tight budget buying a tasty wine.

A cool preference for bargain wines as well for bargain wines is the Spanish Rioja (both red and white). The Rioja is less fruity than the wines mentioned earlier so they are best paired with food.

Advantages of Bargain Wines

Sangrias need a generous quantity of red wine. Red wine, sugar, fruit juice and spirits make up a sangria so you really don’t need a high-class red wine. Boxed wines in stores resemble this wine types. Those in large boxes basically look fancy. Be sure to get the best quality fruit juice and affordable but fine wine so you won’t regret it.

Large Parties and Receptions

At parties, expenses is an issue. Red wines are generally more expensive so purchasing white wines is better option.

Mixing boxed wine with a good quality bottle of red wine will make it taste better. You can achieve a great amount of taste by blending the boxed wine with a fine bottle of red wine. However, you would need fitting decanters and serving carafes plus patience to arrive at that successfully.

Lastly, wisely choose some bites to eat. Plain potato chips doesn’t lend a hand in disguising the bargain wine. Pick out cheeses instead for they can highlight the wine’s flavor even when it’s a bargain.

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

The Olive is the fruit of the olive tree - a common species in Italy, Greece and other countries along the Mediterranean Sea. This is a small oval fruit, green when unripe and black when ripe, used for food and for oil. Eggnog is widespread in America as a traditional Christmas and New Year Eve’s drink. It’s made with milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs and rum or brandy in addition. Sometimes Eggnog Martini may take the place of the usual drink as a different, contemporary tradition. It’s made with rum, vodka, eggnog and syrup. This Martini is normally garnished with cinnamon sticks.

It would be nice if we knew more about the history of olives in martini. In the second half of the 19th century, the first Martini cocktails were garnished with a cherry. Later, the Dry Martini appeared and it included an olive. The main benefit is that olives add salt to your cocktail drink. This is because olives used in cocktails are normally preserved in sea water.

One story says that a cock’s tail has many colorful feathers - like a cocktail has varied exciting alcoholic drinks mixed together. Long ago, they used to put feathers in the glass, in order to indicate that the drink had alcohol. People liked to drink cocktails in the morning, so that’s why they associated them with cocks and though of that name for their drinks.

You can often see or hear about the martini in movies and books. The famous fiction character James Bond likes his Martini “shaken, not stirred”. World-famous highly placed officials, among which, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill, Truman Capote and even the president of U.S- Roosevelt enjoyed drinking Martini.

The true origin of this cocktail is draped in mystery. But what is it about the history of olives in martini? There are not concrete facts and authentic explanations. Even the “inventor” of the drink is unknown, because there are too many people who claim to have created this excellent cocktail first. Their recipes don’t have much in common with the recipe that is in existence today. Martini is usually served with an olive, lemon twist or even cocktail onions.

Martini has always been and will continue to be the best choice in the cocktail menu of every bar. The history of olives in martini isn’t very clear, but it’s clear for sure that they give the cocktail a unique taste. So, go out tonight and have a martini!

James Bond is surely one of the best spy agents and is maybe the most interesting and brave fictional hero. James Bond was first developed in an old book written by the renowned author Ian Fleming. Later on the number of the books increased, as new and new parts appeared. And at some point the book became so famous that they even made a movie for it. The most needed things are the following: ice, water, Gordons Gin, Vodka (the brand doesn’t matter, but it better be grain-based and not potato-based), Lillet Blanc and a dash of Angostura bitters so that you can replicate the exact taste of Kina Lillet. And the only other thing you will need is some patience and careful hands.

Take the champagne glass and fill it up with half water and half ice. Take the shaker and fill one half of it with crushed ice. Mix a dash of Angostura bitters, ounce of Lillet Blanc, one vodka ounce and 3 ounces of the marvelous Gordons Gin in the shaker. Shake up the shaker so that the ingredients mix. Pour the icy mixture of ice and water, out from the champagne goblet. Using the strainer empty the mix from the shaker into the champagne glass. Add a thin lemon peel to the mixture and your Bond martini is prepared.

Alcohol Abuse Is A Common Issue For America’s Military

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Among the struggles US soldiers contend with, there is one enemy that is steadily gaining on them. Alcohol abuse has reached an all time high in the US military. For nearly 20 years, reports have shown that alcohol abuse within the ranks has grown, despite attempts by officials to curtail consumption. Studies have shown that soldiers 18 to 25 are more likely to drink than civilians the same age.

Alcohol abuse stems from common sources - primarily stress. This is why it has become such a problem for the military. Men and women serving their country face continual stress and different from non-military.

Those in the military are required to be in top physical condition. They undergo training programs that are physically and mentally challenging. This process is designed to make them as strong as possible and ready to take handle whatever situation they find themselves in.

Soldiers turn to alcohol for relief from the pressure of so much exertion. It provides a temporary escape from having to think about the dangers and responsibilities of being in the military. During war time such pressures increase and soldiers struggle even more to find a balance between work and family.

Female soldiers face added pressures while serving in the military. They must perform their duties as expected and may also feel the need to “prove” themselves in what has been traditionally a male occupation.

These factors can make for a tense situation. Women also sometimes face sexual harassment in the military.

The US military has acknowledged that alcohol abuse among its ranks is a rising problem. Alcohol abuse reduces efficiency and affects the overall performance of the military. It can also put lives in danger.

The military has no use for a soldier that is not performing at 100 percent. If a soldier is an alcohol abuser they are more likely to abuse their partners and cause disagreement among the ranks, according to studies.

In addition to military problem, this writer also frequently writes regarding avington slipper chairs and moccasin shoe.

Choosing From The Many Kinds Of Wine Opener

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

All sorts of people, from the connoisseur to the casual drinker, will find themselves in need of a good wine opener. With so many to choose from, it is almost hard to believe that so many disparate devices all perform the same function. In their function, they are similar, but each design uses slightly different mechanics to remove a cork.

The waiter’s corkscrew is perhaps the most common type. You’re likely seen it in action already. When closed, it is compact like a Swiss army knife. When you unfold it, there is a small lever arm for bracing against the bottle. A little further down the body on the same end, there is a screw that you manually drive into the cork. Because of their placement on the device’s body, you can use the leverage of the small arm to pull the cork out of the bottle once the screw is deep enough to be secure.

In the hands of a skilled user, a quality waiter’s corkscrew works quite well. It also has the advantage of being quite easy to carry around. Quality models also have a small knife with which to cut the foil off the top of a bottle.

For some people, working the waiter’s corkscrew in at a proper angle can be difficult. Also, securely seating the lever can be tricky. For them, perhaps a winged corkscrew would be preferable.

The two opposing levers that give this design it’s name are quite distinctive. This type of opener is seen in many kitchens. The advantage of this design is the way the screw itself is mounted dead center so that as long as the opener is atop the bottle the screw will maintain the proper angle. The dual levers also make a straight, steady pull easier.

For an even easier way to reliably open bottles, take a look at tabletop models. For the unsteady hand or high-throughput restaurants, a tabletop model might be the way to go. They are large and heavier than other options, but can pull corks with great ease. In fact, some of them are even motorized so that a user need only to place the bottle properly and the contraption will handle the rest.

CO2 openers don’t use a screw at all. Instead, they use pressurized gas to push the cork out of the bottle. Getting the force of the gas from a pressurized canister, the user pushes the needle of the device into the cork until the tip protrudes into the air gap below the cork. Then, a simple push of a button sends the cork pushing out.

Of course on the other end of the spectrum, there are extremely simple screw-pulls. Some travel models are no larger than a marker when they are folded up. These minimalist devices represent a major ease-of-use trade off, since they provide only a screw with a handle. However, that is preferable to being caught with no way to open your bottle.

No matter which wine opener sounds right to you, try to have on on hand. It is a major letdown to get stuck with a bottle you wish to drink but have no way to open. A little preparation will keep your evening on track.

Nick Parker likes to drink wine. He always uses the best wine openers so that his bottles get opened nicely. He keeps a wine bottle opener review blog to recommend wine openers to others.
